As you contemplate purchasing decisions for information systems (electronic health record (EHRs) systems, practice management systems (PMS), and picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) or image archive systems) and imaging devices, an important factor is compatibility or interoperability, e.g., can these systems exchange information with each other? Often, this is a constraining factor, i.e., you are locked into one brand or company’s equipment because they can only talk with each other. Or you have to pay additional fees to customize interfaces between different companies’ devices. If the different device manufacturers agreed on a set of standards, this incompatibility would disappear. Then you could select the equipment you want, based on other considerations.
